The Futility of Life

07 Feb

Futility is a word that we don’t hear used very often, but the signs of it are all around us. I speak daily with people whose lives are futile. Webster defines futility:
pointlessness or uselessness.
“the horror and futility of war”
synonyms: fruitlessness, pointlessness, uselessness, vanity, ineffectiveness, inefficacy

When your life is futile, nothing really matters. You feel that there is no point, or usefulness to your life at all. You get up, go to work, go home, go to bed, and then do it all over again day after day. Week after week. There is nothing much in your life that you look forward to. Nothing really seems to make you feel happy, except for very fleeting periods of time.

Man was not created to live fully without God. Man was created body, soul, and spirit. All human life and human systems are ultimately useless without God, because death comes to all. God wants to deliver people from their futile ways.

Life is short. The Psalmist in 89:47 says: “Remember how short my life is. Have you created everyone for nothing?”.

The destiny of us all is the same. Eccles. 3:19-20 “For the fate of people and animals is the same. As one dies, so does the other; they all have the same breath. People have no advantage over animals since everything is futile. All are going to the same place; all come from dust, and all return to dust”.

Human endeavor is futile. Solomon wrote of the world without a reference to God. Eccles. 1:14 ” I have seen all the things that are done under the sun and have found everything to be futile, a pursuit in the wind”.

Human thoughts are futile. I Cor. 3:19-20 “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God, since it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness; and again, The Lord knows that the reasonings of the wise are meaningless”.

Religious observance without true faith is futile. Mt. 15:8-9 “These people honor me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. They worship Me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commands of men”.

So what is the answer to have a meaningful life? There is only one. The answer is to come to God, through His Son, Jesus Christ. There is only one way to God, not many as is stated so often. Jesus said that anybody that comes to Him in true repentance, that casts all of their sins on Him, He will never cast out. Jn. 6:37.

By coming to Christ you will be free indeed. You will live with a purpose. That purpose will be to glorify your Savior. You will never have hunger or thirst again in your soul. You will be a brand new creature. If you don’t know Him, come to Him today. He will bury your futile life, and resurrect a new life within you with real purpose.
