Unique People

Unique People

I have mentioned in the past that most of my adult life I have been a regular at certain coffee shops. I have been meeting at my current place for around 20 years now. Pretty much our group is made up of the regulars. Friends meeting with friends. Since it’s in a small town of only about 6,000 people we are familiar with most of the people that come through.

This morning when I walked in the door I smiled. When I looked over at my table there sat Pless Sanders. Pless is quite the unusual guy. He only comes in every few months or so. He is a bricklayer by trade. I think he is in his 60s. He is one of the funniest people that I have ever been around. He’s the kind of fellow that a person like me can really get going. When I say get going, I mean get going. I don’t think that you can believe but maybe one word out of ten that he speaks. But boy is he full of tales.

The funniest thing about him though, is not his tales, but Pless is a singer. He will sing at the drop of a hat. A dollar bill put in front of him and you’re certain to get a few songs. This morning after prodding him I was only able to get him to sing a few partial songs. So I pulled out my dollar and that is all that it took. I asked him to sing to the females that were in the coffee shop at the time. Pless walked over to the front counter and began singing ” Today I Started Loving You Again”. He doesn’t have a bashful bone in his body. Naturally the people that walk in are wondering what in the world is going on. There are the snickers, grins, and laughs on every persons face, and a few whispers. After a couple more songs and he took a rest. It was a hilarious and fun time.

Pless is a very unique person. I seriously doubt that most people have ever seen anyone like him. I know I haven’t. Pless is unique, but so am I, and so are you. God has formed each of us just as we are for His glory. David wrote in Psalm 139: 13-17 “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully an wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in ithe depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!”

The sovereign God of the universe formed each of us to be the very persons that we are. This doesn’t mean that we have no need to grow as believers, or that whatever flaws that we have shouldn’t be conformed to the image of Christ. But each of our bodies, and emotions, and personalities that make us up are unique. It seems that many aren’t comfortable with who they are. Everyone wants to fit in and be like everybody else. Let’s each of us become comfortable with the person He wants us to be, for His glory. He did not fearfully and wonderfully make us to be like anyone else.

Serenade us again Pless!

That was well said. I never underestimate the power of a good coffee klutch. In all seriousness, there is fellowship there that can build and heal entire communities. I spent about ten years pouring coffee and I watched the impact some of those men had on the community. Many of them have passed away now, but they are not forgotten. God is good, He knew what he was doing when he created coffee.

It is one of my bright spots of the day. Many of us have a deep friendship and bond that is deep. Like close family. We are a landmark in this little town. Thank you for sharing.

I really enjoyed this post Levi. That is one of my favourite songs, esp when sung by Kenny Rogers, I have almost every single song of Kenny’s on all kinds of media, old vinyl 7inch singles, albums, C90 cassette tapes, CDs and now on i devices. Relating to your writing in this post I was gutted to see what Kenny has done to himself re plastic surgery, he was beautiful just as he was. It’s sad that people can’t appreciate the uniqueness in each other. It’s like our high streets in almost every town in the UK now, they are all identical, it’s very sad. I’m proud to say I will never conform to blend in, I will keep on being just me, a little odd, a little eccentric, but always true to myself. Those lyrics “Today I started loving you again, now I’m right back where I’ve really always been” will resonate with anyone who’s ever loved a narcissist. I don’t know if you saw but the good Lord came and swooped me right out of that. He gave me another chance after me ignoring Him trying to shut the door on it for all these years. The whole thing is a kind of miracle that I still can’t quite believe has happened. The best way I can think of explaining it is like I feel like I’ve had brain surgery and they’ve cut the narcissist away! Whoosh, in the blink of an eye, I’ve been raptured from the narcissist and I’m finally free and I can’t stop smiling about it. Great post my friend. I’d love to hear Pless sing. God bless, Su x
