A Sick Soul ( Poem by John Newton)

12 Apr

Physician of my sin-sick soul,
To thee I bring my case;
My raging malady control,
And heal me by thy grace.

Pity the anguish I endure,
See how I mourn and pine;
For never can I hope a cure
From any hand but thine.

I would disclose my whole complaint,
But where shall I begin?
No words of mine can fully paint
That worst distemper, sin.

It lies not in a single part,
But through my frame is spread;
A burning fever in my heart,
A palsy in my head.

It makes me deaf, and dumb, and blind,
And impotent and lame;
And overclouds, and fills my mind,
With folly, fear, and shame.

A thousand evil thoughts intrude
Tumultuous in my breast;
Which indispose me for my food,
And rob me of my rest.

Lord I am sick, regard my cry,
And set my spirit free;
Say, canst thou let a sinner die,
Who longs to live to thee?

    Thanks for sharing. Each time I read John Newton’s work, I understand once again why his writing is such wonderful ‘food for the soul.’ Thanks also for the follow.

    Thank you for reminding me of the artistry and heart that John Newton’s poetry possesses. Good to read his words and be reminded of “taking up my cross and following” my Savior.

      I’m so glad this has been a blessing to you. I have several Newton poems that I will be posting. Usually one a week. Hope your day is a good one.

    Hi Levi

    Your blog is a reflection of the love you have for your Lord and what you feel it really means to be a Christian. It is so refreshing to my spirit to read such deep soul poetry. I find that there is an increasing surface theology that is pervading much of the Church. I loathe these so called ten minute expository sermons. How can any sermon get to the meat of the Scripture text in ten minutes?

    Your blog gets the reader back to thinking about God and what He should mean to us.

    I would like to give you the gift of a song lyric I wrote this morning, which I believe fits well with the John Newton poem.

    Morning Song

    You are my sunlight

    You are my morning

    I thank You for Your great love

    You hear me as I call to You

    Help me to see You

    Help me to know You

    Help me to feel You beating in my heart

    Let me think of You all of my day

    Heal all the wounds inside of me

    I long to love You

    I long to feel You deep in my soul

    Thanks for Your morning

    Thanks for Your sunlight

    Thanks for loving me just as I am

    Touch me and heal me

    Fill me inside with your abounding joy

    You are my morning song

    Let us all praise Him

    Let us adore Him

    Filled to completeness with His great love

    You are our sunlight

    You are our morning

    You are the God of our day and our night

    Thanks for the beauty of Your creation

    For the birds who sing their sweet songs

    The trees that dance with Your wind

    The water that fills us with Your life

    The clouds and the loveliness of Your sky

    The animals that are reflections of Your love for us

    Fill the empty and the hurting with Your life

    Let them cast every care upon You

    This is our morning song to You

    Keep up the great blogging!
