Lovest Thou Me ?????? (A John Newton Poem)

03 Jan

‘Tis a point I long to know,
Oft it causes anxious thought;
Do I love the Lord, or no?
Am I his, or am I not?

If I love, why am I thus?
Why this dull and lifeless frame?
Hardly, sure, can they be worse,
Who have never heard his name!

Could my heart so hard remain,
Prayer a task and burden prove;
Every trifle give me pain,
If I knew a Saviour’s love?

When I turn my eyes within,
All is dark, and vain, and wild;
Filled with unbelief and sin,
Can I deem myself a child?

If I pray, or hear, or read,
Sin is mixed with all I do;
You that love the Lord indeed,
Tell me, Is it thus with you?

Yet I mourn my stubborn will,
Find my sin, a grief, and thrall;
Should I grieve for what I feel,
If I did not love at all?

Could I joy his saints to meet,
Choose the ways I once abhorred,
Find, at times, the promise sweet,
If I did not love the Lord?

Lord decide the doubtful case!
Thou who art thy people’s sun;
Shine upon thy work of grace,
If it be indeed begun.

Let me love thee more and more,
If I love at all, I pray;
If I have not loved before,
Help me to begin today.

    “Thou who art thy people’s sun” – What a great line. Encouragement for dark days. Thank you, Levi.

        I am, so long as I don’t catch the bug that is going around. Kinda thought I might be today with chills and slept for several hours this afternoon but could have just been overtired too, I hope! Happy New Year!

    Another fine Poem by Mr. Laureate himself. He definitely expresses his precise formulations of word and rhyme.

    Newton set the bar quite high. So much truth reflected so coherently. Thanks for posting.

    It is a little depressing in all the conflict the author faces. I guess conflict is just a part of true belief.

    What a tormented soul–wanting to know and not wanting to know, Lovest thou me? I’m so grateful what matters is the love of the Savior for us.

    Lovest thou me…Do you know of a recording of someone reciting this? My daughter has chosen to recite at her school speech meet, and we need help with feeling and voice inflection. Such a “real” poem.I love it! Thanks!

      What a great poem for your daughter to recite. I’m sorry but I know of no one who recites it. May the Lord bless your daughter as she does it. I’m sure it will be great.

      Thanks!

      Thank you so much, Anna and I wish you the same. It’s a great week to to celebrate and reflect in worship what our Lord has done for His own. Easter Sunday caps off the week of Passover. It’s been good so far. 😊
